Always.bank Review

Always.bank is a very young digital bank with a competitive savings rate, limited connectivity, and support systems that are still being assembled. This is a parking spot with potential—not a banking hub.

My bottom line

This Bank Is Still a Baby

Always.bank is growing in public, and I have encountered several parts that were not ready for the public.

The savings account is simple: no minimum opening deposit, no minimum balance requirement, no monthly maintenance fee, and a competitive variable APY. The digital platform is attractive enough, and Plaid makes linking easy when the other institution is supported.

The problems begin when I move outside that friendly path. Always.bank does not offer manual microdeposit linking. Its routing number has not been recognized by several systems I tested. The support email published on the website did not work, and its Zendesk support system was substantially broken.

Senior leadership at the parent bank eventually got involved, and things began improving. That matters. I am not ready to fire Always.bank, but I am not trusting it with the responsibilities of a primary institution either.

I am watching the direction, not merely the defects.

A young bank will have problems. The question is whether it acknowledges them, fixes them, and becomes better. Always.bank has finally started doing that.

Who holds the money

Always.bank Is Part of 22nd State Bank

Always.bank is a digital division of 22nd State Banking Company in Mobile, Alabama. Deposits at Always.bank and 22nd State Bank are combined when calculating FDIC insurance coverage, rather than receiving separate insurance limits under each brand.

The bank publishes routing number 065106839 for Always.bank. The routing number may be valid, but validity and recognition are not the same thing. Several outside systems I tested did not recognize it, which limited what I could connect and what I could pay.

That is an important distinction: the account is held by an established insured bank, while the Always.bank brand and its supporting technology are still new.

Straightforward savings

The 4.10% Rate Is Straightforward

As of this review update, Always.bank publishes a 4.10% APY on its savings account.

During my earlier testing, the previous website displayed both 4.10% and 4.00% on the same page. That contradiction was real. The rebuilt website now consistently displays 4.10% in the places I checked.

The rate is variable and can change at any time. There is no minimum opening deposit, no minimum balance requirement, and no monthly maintenance fee. Interest compounds daily and is credited monthly.

Unlike an account that makes me complete a checking-account obstacle course, this is a real savings rate from the first dollar. The concern is not how to qualify. The concern is whether the developing account can connect to the rest of my financial life.

External connections

Plaid Works—Until Plaid Does Not

Always.bank uses Plaid to connect external accounts. If most of the institutions in your lineup support Plaid, the setup can be quick: click, authenticate, connect, done.

Always.bank does not provide a manual microdeposit alternative. If Plaid cannot find or authenticate the other institution, I cannot simply enter the routing and account numbers and verify two small deposits.

Connection methodAvailable?Practical result
PlaidYesFast and convenient when the outside institution participates and authentication succeeds
Manual microdepositsNoNo backup route when Plaid cannot complete the connection

Axos is the only institution I have tested so far that gives me both the instant connection and the manual microdeposit route. Always.bank gives me only the first half.

The larger connectivity problem

Outside Systems Do Not Know This Bank Yet

I tried using the Always.bank routing and account information with outside systems, and the institution frequently was not recognized. That makes the account unsuitable for broad bill payment and merchant pulls in my current lineup.

I can still move money through the external accounts that Always.bank successfully links through Plaid. I can also push money from Always.bank to a connected institution. What I cannot assume is that an outside merchant or financial institution will recognize Always.bank and pull money directly.

A valid routing number is not enough.

The rest of the financial system must recognize it. Until that happens consistently, Always.bank remains a place to hold money—not the account from which I run my financial life.

Website

They Have Substantially Improved the Website

The public website explains the products, while actual banking takes place at app.always.bank. That address fits because the online-banking site behaves like an application running in the browser.

The website is much better now than it was when I first began evaluating Always.bank. It appears that someone came in and gave it a serious rebuild. The result is cleaner, more complete, and easier to use.

I cannot know how Always.bank assigned its development resources, but the timing suggests that substantial work was going into this public-site rebuild while parts of the actual banking and support systems still needed attention.

The platform handles the essential savings-account work: balances, transactions, transfers, statements, and account settings. The design is simple and easy to understand. The website is now one of the better-developed parts of the product.

Mobile app

The Mobile App Is Pretty Spiffy

The mobile app is attractive and carries the same simple look and feel as the website. Moving between the two does not feel like entering separate banking systems.

The app handles the core jobs well: viewing the savings account, reviewing transactions, and moving money between external accounts that Plaid has successfully connected. The interface is not where Always.bank falls short.

The app does not solve the routing-number recognition problem or add a manual microdeposit path. Those are limitations of the banking product, not merely the website.

Support under construction

I Had to Reach the Parent Bank to Get Movement

Always.bank published an email address on its website that did not work. I reported the problem, but it remained broken for weeks. That is not a minor cosmetic error for a digital bank. When the bank has no ordinary branch network, a bad support address closes one of the primary doors.

The Zendesk support portal also had substantial problems. Messages and functions did not work reliably, and the experience made the bank feel unfinished.

Real progress began only after I reached senior leadership at 22nd State Bank. The bad email address was corrected, and the Zendesk system is now perhaps 80% operational based on my testing. Work remains, but they are working on it.

I give the parent bank credit for responding once the problems reached the right level. I do not give Always.bank credit for making a customer climb that high before basic support tools were repaired.

Outside the United States

It Worked for Me from Honduras

I was able to access Always.bank from Honduras without the VPN battles I experienced with some other institutions. That is a meaningful positive for a digital bank.

This is my experience from Honduras, not a promise of access from every country or under every security condition. Still, a digital bank should be prepared for legitimate customers who travel, work abroad, or serve overseas.

Bankcraft

A Parking Spot, Not a Payment Hub

Always.bank currently makes the most sense as a place to park money at a competitive rate. I can connect supported institutions through Plaid, transfer money in, let it earn interest, and transfer it back out through those established routes.

I would not build my automatic-payment system around it. Too many merchants and outside institutions fail to recognize the bank, and there is no microdeposit backup when Plaid cannot complete a connection.

That does not make the account useless. A parking account has a legitimate job. It simply must not be confused with a hub that can connect, pay, and transfer everywhere.

The fit

Who Always.bank May Work For

Always.bank may be useful if:

  • You want a straightforward competitive savings APY.
  • Your other institutions connect successfully through Plaid.
  • You need a parking place rather than a complete banking hub.
  • You do not need a minimum balance or want a monthly maintenance fee.
  • You are willing to watch a developing institution improve over time.

Always.bank may be a poor fit if:

  • You need manual external-account linking through microdeposits.
  • You expect broad recognition of the routing number.
  • You want to pay many merchants directly from the savings account.
  • You need polished, fully reliable support tools today.
  • You want one institution to serve as the center of your banking ecosystem.

My conclusion

Promising, Improving, and Not Ready

Always.bank has potential. Potential is not the same as readiness.

The savings rate is competitive and refreshingly straightforward. Plaid connections work well when both institutions participate, access from Honduras worked for me, and the parent bank has begun correcting the failures I reported.

The problems are equally real: no microdeposit alternative, poor routing-number recognition, a bad published email address that remained unfixed for weeks, and a support portal that is still not fully operational.

I am keeping Always.bank in field testing as an emerging parking spot. It is a baby bank backed by an established parent. If its connectivity and support systems catch up with the savings product, it could move higher. For now, I am watching it grow.
